Spotlight on Training: Veer & Wander Salon

Over the course of my 20+ years as an educator I've discovered the most fulfilling part of the process is watching students evolve from eager novices into confident stylists.

Recently, I had the pleasure of participating in a "graduation" ceremony for Gina Riggs of the Veer & Wander Salon in San Francisco as she completed the Women's 3-Day Comprehensive Cutting Class. It was such a an honor to be part of the celebration salon owner (and current Teacher Training enrollee) Connie McGrath created to commemorate Gina's milestone!

I asked Gina and Connie to share their experiences with S•R Education...oh and if you're ever in the area, I highly recommend stopping into the  salon/apothecary. Connie has created such a special spot.

Give us a little background on how you got into the hair industry:

CM: I started my career in Chicago at a very well known salon called Art & Science. It is owned by the founder of American Crew product line David Raccuglia. David taught me so much about hair and the industry; he really instilled the value of continuing education. We were a strong teaching salon and my time there provided me with a great foundation. After years of living in Chicago I decided I needed a change. Since I was California dreaming in a major way I made the move to San Francisco. Which meant rebuilding my clientele from scratch. Being in San Francisco really inspired me to open my own salon. Once I was sure I had the resources and vision I opened Veer & Wander. It's been 3 years and I'm 100% living my dream!

GR: I first started working as the assistant manger at a salon. I quickly realized I had to be a part of this amazing industry! I attended beauty school and just completed the apprenticeship program at Veer & Wander. I can't wait to start my career as a stylist!

How did you first hear about the S•R Education Program?

CM: I first read about Sally starting S•R education online. When I heard from another stylist/teacher she was teaching a class in San Francisco I jumped on board!

GR: Through my boss lady, Connie! She can't say enough good things about the program.

Which of the S•R Education classes have you taken?

CM: I have taken all the classes offered (Women's, Men's, and Creative Cutting Courses). I'm currently enrolled in the 12-month Teacher Training and Mentorship Program.

GR: I've taken the Men's Comprehensive Cutting Course and the Women's Comprehensive Cutting Course (2 times!).

How has the SR Education Program influenced the way you/your stylists cut hair?

CM: The thing I really like about S•R Education is the language of the theory. It's straightforward and gets everyone on the same page. When your team has a uniform technical understanding of haircutting it makes for better hairdressers all around!

GR: In every way possible! After beauty school I was fortunate enough to attend the 3-Day Women's Class and it set me on the right path to learning the fundamentals.

What do you see as the key benefits of an S•R Education?

CM: Having an industry master educator like Sally and her team members watching over you. They want you to learn correctly and never make you feel uncomfortable about asking questions. They truly want you to become better at your craft and have a good time doing it!

GR: Sally is so approachable. As a beginner, it can be intimidating to ask such an accomplished individual questions. Sally is the NICEST, direct, and transparent educator. She never makes you feel bad and inspires you to take your career to the next level. Her educator team is so helpful too.

What would you say to someone thinking about taking a class from Sally?

CM: It is worth the investment! This is knowledge you will use everyday that you cut hair. It's an excellent foundation for all skill levels!

How do you plan on using the S•R Education method in you future work as a stylist?

GR: I'm already using her methods as the base of my work. I plan on becoming an educator and using her methods to ensure our salon is build on solid technique...because it all begins with technique!

Any other thoughts on your experience with the S•R Education Classes/Program you'd like to share...

CM: It's been such a great experience as a salon owner/educator and for the rest of the Veer & Wander team. We've gotten so much out these classes and it feels so good for everyone to have an understanding of what they're doing and why...not just going through the motions! It's critical to have a solid educational program in place at the salon. As a new salon, SR Education has been such a great tool to ensure we are creating the strongest cutting team possible. I am so grateful that Sally created SR education.

GM: It's been so great! I enjoy the pace and the hands-on approach!
